Conference closing event of the project

We are pleased to announce that yesterday, 19 October 2023 we organized the final event of the project “Inter-institutional cooperation and advocacy for the protection of child victims of sexual abuse and violence”, carried out by Save the Children Organization in partnership with the General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection sector 6 through the Active Citizens Fund Romania program, funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through EEA Grants 2014-2021.

It was implemented from March 2022 to October 2023.

The objective of the project was to implement in a coherent way in Romania the Barnahus model of institutional cooperation and multidisciplinary approach for the protection of the rights of child victims of sexual abuse and violence, as a response to the problem of their re-traumatization and re-victimization, in the absence of an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional approach.

The results obtained through the implementation of the project activities are the following:

  • 1 centre created and made operational following the Barnahus model
  • 49 child victims of sexual abuse and violence have benefited from integrated services offered in the pilot centre,
  • development of a national research on services for child victims of sexual abuse and violence,
  • a platform www.stopabuz.ro with information for citizens on promoting children’s rights and reporting violations of children’s rights,
  • 593 children have been trained to improve their awareness on combating all forms of abuse,
  • 123 professionals from local and central authorities were informed about protecting the rights of child victims of sexual abuse and violence by avoiding re-traumatisation of children and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in providing services to abused children.
  • Barnahus centre team trained in the implementation of the Barnahus method.

A key feature of institutions operating under the Barnahus model is that national authorities are included, as are social services, health, child protection and the judiciary. The Barnahus model operating in Bucharest provides a safe and responsive environment for children, bringing all relevant services together under one roof to avoid re-traumatising child victims of abuse and violence.

The project “Inter-institutional cooperation and advocacy for the protection of child victims of sexual abuse and violence” is funded by the Active Citizens Fund Romania programme, financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through EEA Grants 2014-2021.
